Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Monday confirmed that Ukraine is set to purchase USD 90 billion worth of American weapons, financed through European funding, as part of broader security guarantees. However, he clarified that the dates for a proposed trilateral summit with US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin have not yet been finalised.
Speaking at a press conference after talks at the White House with Trump and European leaders, Zelenskyy said: “Date? No, no, no. We don’t have any date. We just confirmed after this productive meeting… Ukraine will never stop on the way to peace, and we are ready for any kind of formats, but on the level of leaders.”
He noted that while Russia had suggested a bilateral with Trump, a trilateral would only follow based on the outcome of that meeting.
According to CNN, the discussions included not just the massive weapons procurement plan but also provisions for Ukraine to manufacture drones, some of which could be purchased by the US. Zelenskyy added that the agreement would be formalised within the next week to ten days.
In a post on X, the Ukrainian president described the talks as “long and detailed,” covering battlefield updates, peace prospects, prisoner exchanges, and the return of children taken to Russia.
“We discussed security guarantees. This is a key issue, a starting point towards ending the war. We appreciate the important signal from the United States regarding its readiness to support and be part of these guarantees,” Zelenskyy wrote, emphasising that a leaders’ summit was “necessary to resolve sensitive issues.”
The discussions come as the US, Ukraine, and European partners explore pathways for a negotiated settlement to the conflict, with Washington’s support seen as crucial for both military and diplomatic security assurances.
